In a scenario such as this with the backing of a large corporation, resources are more likely to be made available to help Carl. There is very little real difference to coaching Carl than another manager who has poor interpersonal skills; there may just be more to work on. So, one of the issues to consider is whether enough time can be made available to help Carl through a lengthy process of adjustment. Group therapy could prove useful; Carl’s doctor may be the best route to this.

There is nothing of substance that the coach needs to report to the sponsoring organisation – all those working with Carl will be aware of his unusual ways – but it would be important to check out that resources can be made available to help Carl for what could be a protracted process of learning about other people.

After an unusual start to coaching be aware of any other signs that appear. A referral to a doctor may be sensible at some stage to check out that there is no underlying psychological problem.

Is this Real?

With a similar first session and background, in this scenario Carl walks out of the team meeting after appearing very distracted and agitated. One of his colleagues says that Carl has really changed. Others agree; apparently his work has deteriorated, he doesn’t complete tasks and seems always distracted.

Carl comes into the coach’s room for the one-to-one session.

Coach:

‘Hello Carl, please sit down.’
